Finding the Right College Path

When my own children reached high school, I quickly realized that applying to college was nothing like it had been when I was young. They were highly motivated students with good grades, but they were not the kind of strong, competitive applicants who could count on being admitted wherever they applied. Finding the right path meant looking beyond rankings and considering where each student could realistically be admitted, succeed, and afford to attend.  That path might lead to a North Carolina community college or public university, a private college elsewhere in the Southeast, or an out-of-state school with strong merit aid opportunities. 

There were more choices, more deadlines, more forms, and much more pressure to make the right decisions. Admissions requirements, financial aid, transfer programs, majors, and college costs were all connected, but the information was often scattered and difficult to compare. Families deserve help seeing the whole picture and finding a path that truly fits the student.

Staying on Track Through College

Getting into college was only the beginning. Once my children enrolled, there were still courses to plan, prerequisites to follow, transfer credits to confirm, deadlines to meet, and financial decisions to make. At times, it felt as though every student needed a project coordinator just to keep everything moving in the right direction.

Even with a B.S. in Chemistry and my own college experience from years ago, I quickly found that today’s college system was dramatically different.  My role was not to make decisions for my children, but to help them stay organized, ask the right questions, understand their options, and avoid overlooking opportunities that could save time or money. That same experience now shapes how I help other students and families navigate college from the first application through graduation and beyond.
